IUPUI going 'green'. . . at expense of tennis: indoor facility closing Aug. 5; stadium demo this summer
The final chapter of tennis in downtown Indianapolis has apparently been written following a decision by IUPUI to "remove components of the tennis center", including the closing of the indoor facility on Aug. 5 of this year. In a release, it's noted that the decision "stems from the intersection of several events, including the expansion of the NCAA headquarters. These events have created an opportunity for IUPUI to redesign (that) area of (the) campus." The release also points out that the changes are in keeping with its long-term Master Plan that was released and approved last year. The Tennis Center has already lost the use of six outdoor courts, which are now being used as parking for the National Institute for Fitness and Sport during the expansion of the NCAA's headquarters. Those courts had already been targeted as the site of a new, multi-floor parking facility with construction beginning this fall. The large stadium court, which had only been used during the now-departed Indianapolis Tennis Championships, will initially hold construction materials for the nearby NCAA expansion before being demolished sometime in the summer. The loss of the tournament, and the revenue it generated for maintenance of the indoor facility, was also listed as a factor in the decision. According to the university, the timing of its decision will allow for the completion of the Tennis Center's summer programs. And while it claims to still be "interested and supportive" of a relocation plan for the Center, the university "cannot commit to new construction expenses at this time." With the exception of the stadium site, which will eventually be home to a new multi-purpose building, the remainder of the Tennis Center will become green space. (4-30-10)
