Reviews of the 55th Annual Championships Tournament were positive with plans of increasing participation for 2012. A detailed discussion was had from the President's Report on her attendance at the ATA 94th Championships in Atlanta. A National Ranking Committee and Membership Committee were called into existence by President Franklyn Scott at the Annual Membership Meeting. MID-TAC followed suit and established its own Section Ranking Committee.

MID-TAC's Coaches and Instructors Committee is poised to have at least two additional Coaches Connection Junior Camps before the close of the year. Plans were also  shared for launching the 2nd Annual "Friends of MID-TAC Juniors" Holiday Raffle October 20 to December 11, 2011. The new Research and Development Chairperson, Roger Allen, attended his first MID-TAC Meeting and left armed with pertinent information to solicit funds on behalf of MID-TAC's Junior Development efforts with new vigor and purpose.

The key accomplishment of the Meeting, however, was the adoption of MID-TAC's Policy and Procedurals Manual that was developed under the supervision of Parliamentarian, Richard Brown of Detroit, MI, [click here for copy]. The Manual was adopted by a unanimous vote of all eleven of MID-TAC Member Clubs - each represented at the Meeting.

MID-TAC is in good shape and ready to move to the next level. A call out was also made for people interested in being trained as tournament directors, site directors and site director assistants. Contact the President for details at mdorsey@acninc.net.

IUPUI going 'green'. . . at expense of tennis: indoor facility closing Aug. 5; stadium demo this summer

ITC_courts_overview.jpgThe final chapter of tennis in downtown Indianapolis has apparently been written following a decision by IUPUI to "remove components of the tennis center", including the closing of the indoor facility on Aug. 5 of this year. In a release, it's noted that the decision "stems from the intersection of several events, including the expansion of the NCAA headquarters. These events have created an opportunity for IUPUI to redesign (that) area of (the) campus." The release also points out that the changes are in keeping with its long-term Master Plan that was released and approved last year.  The Tennis Center has already lost the use of six outdoor courts, which are now being used as parking for the National Institute for Fitness and Sport during the expansion of the NCAA's headquarters.  Those courts had already been targeted as the site of a new, multi-floor parking facility with construction beginning this fall.  The large stadium court, which had only been used during the now-departed Indianapolis Tennis Championships, will initially hold construction materials for the nearby NCAA expansion before being demolished sometime in the summer.  The loss of the tournament, and the revenue it generated for maintenance of the indoor facility, was also listed as a factor in the decision.  According to the university, the timing of its decision will allow for the completion of the Tennis Center's summer programs.  And while it claims to still be "interested and supportive" of a relocation plan for the Center, the university "cannot commit to new construction expenses at this time."  With the exception of the stadium site, which will eventually be home to a new multi-purpose building, the remainder of the Tennis Center will become green space.   (4-30-10)

Google "Indianapolis Tennis Magazine" (June 12, 2010 publication) to get the picture of the Center if it does not display on your screen.
